Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities
1.The Assistant Dean serves as the principal development
liaison to the Dean of SEAS on behalf of FAS. This position works closely with
the Dean of SEAS and serves on the Deans senior staff. The Assistant Dean interacts regularly with
SEAS faculty and administrators.
2. The Assistant Dean engages with the Dean for FAS and
Senior Associate Dean and Director of Development for FAS to advocate for the
advancement of SEAS priorities to the most generous current and prospective
donors to the University and in the engagement of the president and the provost
in support of SEAS development activities.
3.This position is responsible for implementing the
Campaign and annual strategic plans for SEAS fundraising, budget oversight and
management, and working with FAS Development leadership to ensure proper
staffing of SEAS needs.
4.Responsibilities include staffing the Dean of SEAS,
oversight of the Deans development calendar and travel, developing proposals
for SEAS and collaborative science and engineering fundraising initiatives (including
across multiple schools), developing, recruiting and managing SEAS campaign
volunteers as well as other development-related committees and events as needed.
The Assistant Dean also is responsible for utilizing the existing
infrastructure Alumni Affairs and Development to support SEAS fundraising
activity including pipeline management, volunteer management, dean activity,
operations, stewardship, events, etc.
5.The Assistant Dean must be entrepreneurial and have
the ability to identify, engage and cultivate non-alumni potential donors. Responsible
for identifying, developing and managing the prospect pool for SEAS with a
special emphasis on identifying new prospects.
Works closely and collaboratively with colleagues across the University to
identify existing donors who are graduates of the University, as well as
potential donors with no traditional ties to Harvard.
6.Ability to develop donor strategies in collaboration
within and beyond the Faculty of Arts and Sciences portfolio.
7.Monitors and facilitates progress toward prospect solicitation,
partnering with the primary prospect manager.
8.Serves as the liaison with FAS Development Services to
develop on-going training and materials on SEAS priorities for all fundraisers and
with Marketing and Communications to develop an overall strategy for SEAS
development communications during and beyond the University-wide campaign.
9.Works closely with senior fundraisers and
administrators to create a comprehensive campaign strategy for SEAS.
10.Partners with faculty in developing presentations for
cultivation events and meeting with prospective funders.
11.Liaises with the Office of Stewardship to develop recognition
strategies for donors to SEAS.
12.Manages a portfolio of principal gift prospective and
current donors with the emphasis on developing strategies and relationships
with donors capable of making gifts of $5M
for SEAS.

Basic Qualifications
1. Bachelors degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
2. Minimum of 15 years experience in university
fundraising and administration preferred. Candidates with experience in related
fields with readily transferrable skills will be given strong consideration.
3. Travel domestically and, occasionally,
internationally, is required.

change. Must be creative and proactive
yet disciplined, discriminating and able to streamline work volume in order to
maintain bottom line efforts in midst of multi-tasking and daily re-prioritizing.
Must have ability to innovate, think strategically and conceptually, manage
multiple projects simultaneously and handle even difficult situations with a
sense of humor. Must be able to listen
carefully as well as to influence and persuade others.
3. Familiarity with academic communities and knowledge of
Harvard are assets.
4. Must be a professional, confidential, honest and
trustworthy person. Must have an even disposition and be able to deal
effectively and politely with people from all types of backgrounds and
experience and in all types of difficult situations. Must have definite
abilities to evaluate problems accurately and display good, sound and
confidential judgment. Must maintain a professional and caring demeanor. Must
be able to listen carefully as well as to influence and persuade others.
5. Excellent public speaking, presentation skills and
written communication skills required.
