Job Summary Reporting to the Vice President for Human Resources (VPHR), the Director, Strategic HR Communications and Engagement, is responsible for transmitting the vision, mission, and priorities of Harvard Human Resources (HHR) through the development and execution of engaging EDIB-centered internal and external communications strategy. This includes establishing a robust social media presence incorporating brand marketing and setting the building blocks of Harvard's employment value proposition. This position will have strategic oversight over university-wide recognition programs and perks. Key responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Job-Specific Responsibilities - Provides strategic communications counsel to the VPHR and senior leadership team and sets the strategic direction of HHR communications consistent with the University's and HHR's mission, vision, and priorities. - Sets and executes the roadmap to modernize the look, feel, and methods used to communicate to and engage Harvard staff around HR, benefits, services, and other employee-related programs and resources. - Develops internal communications plans and effective delivery strategies on behalf of the VPHR and his senior leadership team and responds to their respective functional areas' needs. - Develops a distinctive HHR brand voice and guidelines that align with and inform the University's mission and priorities. Ensures brand integrity across all communications and technology platforms. - Reviews and edits specific documents drafted by subject matter experts to ensure they are written in an appropriate and inclusive manner for the targeted audience and comply with voice and branding guidelines. - With content input from functional areas, develops and distributes print-based and digital communications (e.g., policy manuals, internal newsletters, process handbooks, compensation and benefits information, Job Postings for social media platforms, HR programs, etc.) - Develops strategy and oversees execution for internal publications such as newsletters, press releases, email announcements, planned publications, social media, intranet, videos, special projects, and initiatives in ways that are mutually reinforcing - Collaborates and works closely with Harvard Public Affairs and Communications (HPAC) team on external publications to ensure alignment across internal and external communications strategies and plans, and acts as HHR's liaison to HPAC, including ensuring coordination and collaboration within HPAC's digital staff and the network of University-wide digital staff HPAC facilitates. - Develops annual and initiative-specific communications plans and campaigns, from strategy to implementation, to advance internal and external HHR announcements and programs - Builds understanding of the digital and social landscape and key audiences. - Provides strategic counsel and resources to pivot to new ideas and technologies and address gaps. - Coaches internal project teams on approaches for effective employee communications. - Ensures all communications and platforms utilize inclusive language and are digitally accessible for all audiences. - Collaborates with University-wide HR departments and other stakeholders to create the employer value proposition at HHR to be integrated within all talent acquisition and retention efforts and in support of culture rich in affirmation, gratitude, and connectedness to the University's mission. - Oversees the planning, management, and implementation of all university-wide employee recognition programs (including Harvard Heroes and Service Milestones) and perks. - Leads and mentors a team of talented communication professionals, as well as program management professionals who develop university-wide recognition programs and perks - Cultivates and nurtures trust and partnership with the Office of the Executive Vice President, senior leaders, and leaders across the University overall. - Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, inclusion, belonging, equity, and cultural awareness through actions, interactions, language, and communications with others. - Other duties and projects as assigned. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, or a related discipline or equivalent work experience required. Minimum of 12 years of professional experience, with at least 10 years in communications, marketing, public relations, or related experience. Additional Qualifications and Skills Advanced degree preferred. Experience overseeing communications functions, preferably in a complex or decentralized setting. Experience developing and implementing communications strategy, managing direct and indirect reports, and overseeing departmental budgets. Requires exceptional written and verbal communications skills, creativity, responsiveness, active listening, sound judgment, persuasiveness, and the ability to convene and lead by influence respectfully and collaboratively. Previous leadership experience required, including managerial experience and successful mentoring team members in their professional skills. Advanced digital skills and social media understanding; fluent in Microsoft Word and PowerPoint. Familiarity with project management tools, proficiency with communications technologies, and ability to learn new technologies as they emerge. Proven experience managing digital content strategies. A track record of established media relations and brand recognition work. Understanding of copywriting, graphic design, layout, and publishing. Working knowledge of content management systems. Familiarity with social media platforms and email marketing. Impeccable copywriting and copyediting abilities. Collaborative and consultative style. Enthusiasm and unapologetic mission orientation are non-negotiable.
Salary Range:
$200K -- $250K
Minimum Qualification
Communications & PREstimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
