Job-Specific Responsibilities Harvard Kennedy School Executive Education (HKS Exec Ed) is the premier worldwide source for executive-level leadership development focused on public service. Exec Ed operates as a department within HKS and provides 80
programs ranging from 1 to 4 weeks in length to 4500
participants each year. Programs are delivered online, in-person, or a combination of both, and are offered as open enrollment via an admissions process or as custom programs focused on the needs of public service or government organizations, sponsors, or donors. Exec Ed is a critical piece of the HKS mission to improve public policy and leadership so people can live in societies that are more safe, free, just, and sustainably prosperous. Programs are led by faculty and attract accomplished public leaders from around the world, with roles in the government, nonprofit, multilateral and corporate sectors. Executive Education at Harvard Kennedy School seeks a collaborative, highly organized, and detail-oriented Accounting Manager to oversee the department's general accounting and close activities, financial operations function, and manage two full-time accounting staff. Successful candidates will have an eye towards using technology to automate, be customer-service focused, and able to take ownership of tasks and projects and move them to completion. The Accounting Manager's duties and responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:
Manage the month-end close:
ensure an accurate and complete close by managing a calendar and checklist, prepare and review journal entries and reports, and look for opportunities to improve and automate. Provide sponsored grant post-award activities:
maintain staff allocations, prepare interim and final reports for sponsors, and manage the quarterly effort certification process. Manage and execute faculty compensation:
ensure policies are updated and followed, exceptions are documented consistently, and faculty are compensated accurately. Oversee financial operations:
A/R, A/P, system access, and account code maintenance. Foster a culture of financial control:
maintain and ensure compliance with existing policies and procedures, identify control gaps by performing periodic audits or tests and propose solutions, and facilitate a paperless environment by keeping documentation up to date and organized. Partner with internal staff and other financial groups within HKS and around Harvard:
stay up to date on policies, technologies, and best practices, and incorporate and socialize where applicable, and take a leadership role in organizing and facilitating meetings. Manage a team of two accounting staff:
a Senior Staff Accountant and a Financial Associate. Assist the Senior Director of Finance and Administration with project work, identifying areas for automation or improvement, and promoting a culture of customer service. Assure that accounting practices keep pace with evolving business requirements. Typical Core Duties Responsible for effective staff management, including hiring and orientation, training and development, workflow and performance management, and the promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment Evaluate accounting processes and procedures, recommend improvements Oversee accounting transactions, account reconciliations, journal entry verifications and reporting May prepare tax documentation and financial statements Develop and distribute communications to internal and external constituencies Provide technical expertise, problem-resolution and training Ensure financial compliance with University policies and procedures, audit and accounting disclosure requirements, and applicable legal rules and regulation Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Accounting or equivalent work experience required Minimum of 5 years' relevant work experience Additional Qualifications and Skills The following qualifications and skills are not required. Any combination of the following is a plus:
MBA or CPA preferred Demonstrated computer skills using Microsoft Office suite and the internet and willingness/ability to learn and adapt to new software and technologies. Capacity to manage, prioritize, and respond to customers in a timely manner. Must be efficient, proactive, and have strong attention to detail, as well as be able to multi-task and to meet firm deadlines. Effective communication skills and the ability to translate complex financial concepts to a non-financial audience. Interpersonal, problem-solving, and time-management skills. $69,100 - $116,100 Note:
Starting salaries typically fall in the lower half of the salary range; however, they are ultimately determined by the scope of the position, the candidate's relevant experience, and internal equity. Harvard offers a generous benefits package including:

$80K -- $150K
