Senior Director of Development, Principal Gifts

Job Summary This position will be based on our campus in Cambridge, MA. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic this position will be remote until further notice. Alumni Affairs and Development (AA&D) comprises the University Development Office (UDO), Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development, AA&D Resources, and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA). There is a unique relationship between the University and the FAS fundraising operations, resulting from a long history in which University fundraising ultimately grew out of College fundraising. Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS) Development FAS Development is responsible for the fundraising efforts supporting the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, including Harvard College, the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. FAS Development staff work with Harvard College donors, alumni, parents, and friends who provide critical support for the FAS and often for other parts of the University.
Summary:
The position reports to the Executive Director of Development, Principal Giving for the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Senior Director will be an integral member of the FAS Principal Gifts team and will work closely with the Executive Director of Principal Giving and the Dean for Development/AVP to secure lead gifts to advance evergreen and emerging fundraising priorities. As a senior fundraiser, the Senior Director will also be called upon to support and advise academic leaders and alumni volunteers in their development activities on behalf of the FAS. This is a senior fundraising role which requires the incumbent to lead by example and serve as a role model and mentor to staff across FAS Development. As a Principal Gift fundraiser in FAS Development, the Senior Director plays a critical role in realizing the FAS's academic aspirations by securing lead gifts to advance the Faculty of Arts and Sciences' multi-year fundraising plan. This will be accomplished by developing and executing thoughtful engagement and solicitation plans for FAS' highest potential prospective donors. These plans will be informed by the Senior Director's knowledge of prospects' interests and will often leverage the strategic engagement of academic and administrative leaders and peer volunteers. The Senior Director will manage a principal gifts portfolio of select active prospects with the capacity to make philanthropic commitments of $5M or more to the FAS. The Senior Director will be called upon to partner with colleagues across FAS Development to inform fundraising feasibility assessments for emerging priorities, to guide and support long-term stewardship and donor-relations plans and will be required to support academic leaders and alumni volunteers through briefings and staffing prospect meetings. The Senior Director will work closely with volunteer leaders to identify and engage large donors in support of FAS priorities. The Senior Director will work closely with colleagues in the University Development Office and other Harvard schools to advance mutual and unified proposals where appropriate. Job-Specific Responsibilities Manage a personal portfolio of prospects with the capacity to give $5M and larger. Partner with University and FAS colleagues, and volunteer leaders, to create and implement strategies that will lead to long-term relationships and significant financial support from prospective principal donors. Facilitate all related communication. Incorporate the President, Vice President, FAS Dean of Development, FAS academic and administrative leaders and faculty to deepen donors' interest in and connection with the University. Serve as an active member of the FAS Principal Gifts team in helping to develop the best strategy for principal gifts prospects across the FAS. Work closely with fundraisers and resource teams across FAS to develop and manage engagement, solicitation and stewardship for high-capacity prospective donors. Plan, staff and brief senior administrative and academic administrators and faculty for prospect/donor visits and events as necessary. Maintain appropriate electronic documentation on a timely basis, including proposal tracking, contact reports, donor strategies, and next steps. Work collaboratively, proactively, and in a professional, service-oriented manner with all colleagues to further the development goals of the FAS. Demonstrated commitment to work within a diverse environment and interact collegially with individuals of different backgrounds. May be called upon to provide senior leadership of fundraising initiatives and other duties as assigned. Ability to work occasional evenings or weekends and travel as necessary for donor meetings. Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree. Minimum of 15 years of major and/or principal gifts fundraising experience or commensurate related experience working with high-net-worth individuals. Additionally, the Senior Director will exhibit strong soft skills that include an ability to form strong relationships within the FAS, University and externally, an ability to leverage volunteer leadership in advancing donor relationships and gift discussions, an intellectual curiosity about the work of the FAS and an ability to translate a broad range of academic areas into inspiring visions for donors, and a high level of adaptability and flexibility as needs and priorities change. The Senior Director will be comfortable operating within the context of a broader prospect team and understand the benefits of cultivating multiple points of contact between assigned prospects and the institution. Due to frequent interaction with senior administrators and faculty, the Senior Director must possess excellent communication skills, the ability to process and maintain confidential information, and ably lead others in moving prospect strategy forward. The Senior Director will demonstrate professionalism, integrity, collegiality, self-motivation, sound judgment, and organization. Salary Range:
$250K -- $500K+
