Program Manager
Job Summary The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University seeks a program manager to join its Institute for Rebooting Social Media staff team. The program manager's primary responsibility will be managing a professional project-based fellowship, with additional responsibility to support programming across the Institute as needed. By convening participants across industry, government, civil society, and academia in focused, timebound collaboration, the Institute is building a portfolio of research, projects, programming, and educational opportunities. The fellowship program will recruit a cohort of fellows from across sectors and disciplines to prototype, iterate, and create new projects, including policies, designs, tools, frameworks, etc., that improve the state of social media. The program manager's role includes recruiting a cohort of fellows, designing and executing programming, managing program logistics, and supporting fellows' professional trajectories and project development. The program manager will join the Berkman Klein Center's world-class community of scholars and practitioners, and work in close collaboration with the Berkman Klein Center and Institute's team of staff, fellows, and faculty to advance a range of interdisciplinary, cutting-edge programs and research related to the study and development of Internet & society. Job-Specific Responsibilities As Program Manager, you will:
o Manage the Institute fellowship, including developing and implementing administrative systems and processes including application and selection processes; design and implement programming such as regular feedback sessions, learning events, etc.; set and monitor program timelines and outputs; and contribute to fellowship deliverables and grant reports o Support additional Institute programming, such as workshops, events, and the Institute Visiting Scholars program, as needed o Serve as a principal administrative contact and key source of program information for fellowship activities, and liaise with internal & external partners, participants, students, and staff; collaborate closely with Center's communications team to highlight program, fellows, and projects, including pitching ideas for communications pieces and drafting content o Manage fellowship logistics, including onboarding of fellows into Harvard administrative systems and ensuring and delivering logistical support for programs; support offboarding of fellows following program completion, including keeping apprised of their ongoing projects o Support fellows' participation in the program both individually and as a cohort, including connecting them to relevant work and communities and serving as an advocate for them and their work o Conduct research relevant to the program and prepare briefing materials or program sessions, meetings, and events; draft and edit written outputs including scholarly papers, program evaluations, grant proposals and reports to funders o Manage at least one direct report; supervise BKC staff, interns, and research assistants as needed o May participate in budgetary review Basic Qualifications Bachelor's degree and 5 or more years of progressive program management experience, as well as supervisory experience. Additional Qualifications and Skills Domain knowledge of technology studies, social media, or related fields; experience with Internet, technology policy, social media related issues, and/or internet research and publishing tools Prior experience with project coordination and project management, including command of project management tools, workflows, and best practices Experience facilitating programs, including designing and leading workshops or other educational sessions Experience managing workflows and personnel, including direct reports, student research assistants, within non-profit or academic organizations Focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion and eagerness to prioritize these values within all aspects of work and programming Organization, attention to detail, motivation to take initiative, and ability to thrive in a fast paced, dynamic environment Effective written communication skills, including for academic and general audiences; interpersonal skills, including experience leading groups The right candidate will have heart, verve, and vigor; a can-do attitude; and a strong desire to effect positive change.They will thrive in a committed, collaborative, and tight-knit community that encourages creativity and serious fun, values novel approaches to solving problems, continually builds upon best-practices and lessons learned, and supports its community members' independent and collective goals. Working Conditions Based on the changing needs of the Center and the Institute, the program manager may be called upon for other tasks at short notice. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required. Depending on the public health situation, travel opportunities may arise. Additional Information As with all Berkman Klein Center positions, this is a term appointment currently expected to extend to June 30, 2023 with potential for renewal, subject to departmental funding and need.
