Job Description:
SOFTWARE AND HARDWARE SPECIALIST, Brain and Cognitive Sciences, to provide customized engineering services to students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, and staff, with the ultimate goal of providing the research community with the engineering support needed to perform cutting-edge experiments that would otherwise be impossible. The services provided include training, design, fabrication, software integration, repair, and resource-sharing with respect to electrical, optical, and computer-related hardware and software. Will provide both basic knowledge and advanced hands-on support with state-of-the-art research equipment; develop an understanding of research needs and convert those ideas to concrete and detailed design plans; act as liaison for planning and coordinating the fabrication of research instruments; write code to control and/or integrate with either custom hardware or purchased hardware; diagnose problems with existing research instruments; work with researchers and outside services/vendors; act as a hub to help the research personnel access, reuse, and modify existing design files; and make contacts with expert peers across the research community.
Job Requirements:
REQUIRED: bachelor's degree (master's or higher preferred) in engineering sciences, e.g., computer/software engineering, computer science, electrical or mechanical engineering, or related field; minimum of five years' experience in hardware and software design in a research environment; expert knowledge of software and hardware design and tight integration of both to execute experiments; demonstrated experience training others how to use new software and hardware; demonstrated ability to write custom software to program microprocessors and to understand research needs and convert those ideas to concrete and detailed design plans; and experience identifying, utilizing, and managing outsourced resources.
