Manufacturing Engineer
L3 Open Water Power, located in Somerville, Massachusetts develops and builds underwater power systems based on our novel aluminum-water chemistry. These power systems are useful for Unmanned Undersea Vehicles (UUVs)) and ocean-floor sensors for commercial and military applications. We have an immediate opening for a Business Development and Proposal Manager.
As a small business unit (about 10 people) within a large public company (>38,000 people), L3 Open Water Power functions as an agile, innovative science & engineering house. We were an MIT spin-out founded by the inventors of our core technology. Our core engineering functions include complete research science, chemical, mechanical and electrical design, and control software development for our aluminum-water power systems. We have access to the resources of the greater L3 Technologies while still providing the daily feel of a small company.
Responsibilities:
Responsible for helping to guide the mechanical engineering team to determine the best process by which to manufacture both prototypes as well as production modules.
Manage manufacturing at contract facilities and/or will set up new manufacturing lines as we scale up and require additional manufacturing space.
Find and vet new manufacturing processes to improve the performance, reliability, or cost of our products.
Experience with low cost manufacturing, including plastics and metal forging is a plus but not required.
Requirements:
BSME and 5-8 years of related manufacturing engineering experience.
Breadth of background in machining, plastics manufacturing and bonding, metal fabrication (casting, forging, etc), plating, adhesives, bonding, e/m assembly operations and manufacturing flow.
Experience choosing and optimizing manufacturing processes with vendors for quality and cost
Experience with environmental testing a plus.
Experience with starting up manufacturing lines either in house or with a contract manufacturer
Experience taking a product from prototype to production a plus
Strong multidiscipline communication skills
